WORLD HERITAGE STATUS

CONSERVATION

Machangulo Private Reserve is one of the last protected habitats of the coastal African elephant. Conservation International considers the area an endangered ecoregion, and one of the earth’s 36 biological hotspots, due to its important role in supporting the biological diversity of vulnerable species. The marine diversity is incredible, and we are often visited by our endangered namesake, the loggerhead turtle. We are also graced by passing whales, dolphins, abundant fish and even the occasional endangered dugong. The area is deemed as the second richest floristic region in southern Africa. Around 1,900 endemic plant species are found here, of which over a quarter are threatened with extinction.

MACHANGULO PRIVATE RESERVE

Machangulo Private Reserve is home to a myriad of wildlife, from big game, birds and butterflies, to endangered marine species, seldom seen anywhere else on the planet. The dune forest surrounding our lodge provides a habitat for small wonders such as vervet monkeys, red duiker and mongoose. Our concierge can organise a drive through the nature reserve, where you can look out for some of the 350 different species of birds that habitat the area, and our iconic African game. Or don some of our snorkelling gear and immerse yourself in the temperate, briny waters to spot turtles, rays, batfish, marlin, pipefish, parrotfish, and clownfish, to name but a few.

MAPUTO PRIVATE RESERVE

This 100,000-hectare reserve is incredibly important for the protection of the African elephant. There are a number of vital conservation projects in the area, supported by the Mozambique government and Peace Parks Foundation. These include a wildlife translocation programme, to reintroduce species that were once locally extinct, and anti-poaching units. The conservation efforts are supported by eco-tourism activities, which in turn provide a vital income avenue for local communities. As well as elephants, you can expect to find hippos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, servals, impalas and many more iconic species, within the reserve.
